What is a Dental Implant? |
|
Dental implants are metal anchors surgically positioned in the jaw bone underneath the gums to support a crown where natural teeth are missing. Implants are usually made from a metal called titanium which is readily accepted by the body. A small titanium screw is inserted into and fuses with the jawbone. A post or "abutment" attaches to the implant, and a crown fits over the abutment. A phenomenon called osseointegration means that titanium is so compatible that bone attaches itself to the implant. |
